Egbu road has been marked for demolition and expansion in accordance with the Urban Renewal program of the Gov Rochas Okorocha administration.

Residents living along Egbu Road from Christiana junction down to Road Safety yesterday reported that the Governor paid a visit to enlighten them of the road expansion which was now coming towards their area.

According to one resident who stop a Dknaija.com correspondent, the Governor said "...unu abula ya abu, owu Agnes Nwanma oga erule onye owula..." meaning in English "...don't rush it (urban renewal) it is like Agnes Nwanma (referring to a popular local tooth powder) it would reach everybody..."

Residents are now apprehensive as the expansion ultimately means massive demolition of buildings and private property along the Egbu Road axis.

The narrow road is hemmed on both sides by buildings and shops. Residents and tenants now count probably in days or weeks before the bulldozers of demolition roll through.

The downside of the Urban Renewal program and demolitions throughout the state is the government's failure to compensate those whose buildings, property and goods are destroyed in the process as well as the failure of the government to provide alternative accommodation for displaced residents.
